I have been overrun with some kind of algae. I have not been able to find out what type it is or how to get rid of it. My fish are getting caught in it and it seems to be suffocating all of my other plants. I get my water from a well and I add the usual salt and that's about it. I am not apposed to using chemicals if it will get rid of this stuff.

it is like strings, but it attaches to everything and i can't get it out...

Pictures? There are lots of stringy algaes. There's hair algae, which is green. There's black brush algae which is usually black but can be reddish. There's staghorn which is usually grayish-brown.

Post some pictures for a sure way to find out what kind. If anything, you might have to take everything out of the tank and clean it and do a big water change.
