Hello everyone! Just joined up today. About me? Well, I'm 50, and have been keeping aquariums for the last 40 years (on and off)! I'm far from an expert. I have improved in recent years! :) I'm a Classical/electronic music composer, and I'm based in Tasmania...the coldest part of Oz. I loved it when I lived in the far North of Australia for 6 years...wading in the same streams as Australian rainbows, watching archer fish do their thing...communing with the turtles. I currently have a community tank which is just 120 Litres...next year I will get something substantially larger. Am undecided whether to go for an Amazon biotope, or a Mbuna biotope. It's fun researching my options! :)

Michael.

Hey there
Its just so happens that im Aussie too, Im in Wollongong and are one of the only Australians here. There are some but not many. This is a great place to learn any questions will be answered to the best of our ability. Whether it be salt or fresh!
So what kind do keep?

Hi Jason! A pretty mixed collection at the moment; one blue gourami, one 6 inch silver shark that just shouldn't be in the tank at all (it's only 3 and a half feet), two angels, a bunch of neons (live food!!), some glowlights, three serpaes, two two spot barbs (love these, and want to replenish my stocks), two bristlenoses (female), one male krib, two female albino kribs, one Chinese algae eater, a school of danios, and a few whiteclouds. The tank is densley planted in spots, with plenty of rocks and wood for hiding places. Next year I plan to get a 350 litre tank - to put my festives in! lol. What sort of tank do you have?

Wow thats alot of fish how big is the tank
My tanks well
I have a 29gal that is temporally housing 1 electric yellow chiclid and 2 clown loaches
2 10gals on with 3 bronze corys and ed Cherry Shrimp and the other a yabby!

Ah yabbys!! I used to catch them in the creek that runs by my flat, here in South Hobart (I've returned to live in the same neighborhood I grew up in). Did you catch yours? We always put them back though! lol Yep, a few too many fish, but I run an oversize cannister filter and do a 20% water change every two days. The fish all seem really happy. The tanks is 1085 mm, or just under 4 foot. It's a bit shallow though. I'll be thinning out my tank when I set up my bigger one next year, because the way things currently are, there's not enough room for my larger fish to grow. Cheers, Michael.

No i didnt catch my yabby a store bought blue claw yabby named Shirly. Because i had a grandma named Shirly and she had a dam and we caught yabbies all the time and it was a lot of fun. Unfortunatly she died of bowe cancer about 6 months ago.
Its good tha you are doing water changes every 2 days but i would up the anti and do at least 30-40% Water changes just from the quantity. And i would really recommend taking back the Silver shark because it gets massive!
Yeah i live in Wollongong so its getting warmer here what about youu?

Yes. It's finally getting warmer!! At least I'm used to the Tassie winters again. Sorry to hear about your grandma. Yeah, the salesperson didn't warn us about the size those sharks grow to (I should've done my homework). The store won't take him back; I think I'll put an ad in the flea market section of our local paper. Yes, good point about the water changes I think :)

Don't think so Jason. We've got Animal Tuckerbox, which is similar to the Cairns Petbarn I used to visit. Plenty of specialists aquarium shops down here though. Also, a big tropical fish hatchery about an hours drive South of Hobart. I must try to visit it one day!
