High nitrate levels.

Hi all. I m having a few problems with the nitrate levels in my mixed Malawi tank. I do a weekly water change of about 25% but I cannot seem to get low nitrate levels. It's annoying cos I'm starting to get algae on the glass in the tank which I keep having to clean. Any advice people.

Have you tested the water from your tap?

Do bigger water changes. A good indication that you're overstocked is when your weekly water changes can't keep the nitrate under 40ppm. Another thing you can check is your filter. Make sure it's been rinsed well.
