I thought the same thing, so I took a sample of my tank water into the LFS for them to test it. They got the same results. All I can figure for the lack of nitrates is that the plants and algae are using them all up.
When I did my fishless cycle, the bacteria would change 4 ppm of ammonia into nitrates in under 24 hours, with no trace of ammonia of nitrite left.
Also, I really have no real bio load. 1 betta, 2 amano shrimp, and 3 otto cats.
