Im curious on the importance of a sump or refugium on my 55 gal. reef tank. I do 10-20% on the same day every week. Is that enough to keep the water in check?

Specs:
55 gal
soft corals
cheapy hob filter
chaeto algae
60+ live rock
RODI water
2X maxijet 1200 PH

Sump isn't needed but depending on your bioload you may want a HOB skimmer. It'll really decreased your organics and keep your algae in check better. I don't think a 55 with just a "cheapy hob filter" will last long without an algea break out.

Where is the cheato, in the display?

its in the hob filter chamber with light over it. I have a diy skimmer on there but I think investing in a larger skimmer would be best. maybe a reef octopus.

Tbh, an appropriately sized refugium adds a huge layer of stability to a tank. I wouldnt even consider anything larger than a Pico without one.
