Isolation tanks

Are they necessary? I'm totally new to saltwater and about about to start cycling my tank at the end of the week. Is disease common with fish purchased at lfs? I bought a 10 gallon for this purpose (my main tank will be 29) and need info.

A ten gallon quarantine tank is a great purchase. Disease is common, common enough to put preventive measures in place such as a QT tank.
