Im in the process of setting up a new tank (FOWLR) and was wondering if i really needed to spend a lot on a light. Would it be alright if i just went to the hardware store and got a fluorescent light strip, or am i going to need something with some actinic lights as well?

For a FOWLR tank you need no special lighting. Just normal flourecent lighting is all you need but if you ever go corals you`ll need a higher output lighting system. The normal flourecent system will not work.

Yep, any lighting will be fine for a fish only tank. :) One place you can save huge lol. But if you ever go reef well then you'll have to get a higher output light fixture like melosu above stated.

Good luck!!

That's what i figured, just wanted to make sure. thanks for the replies.
