Right now my girlfriend and I have a 10 gallon hexagonal salt water tank with basically one damsel, but we want to move it to a traditional square 10 gallon tank and do more with it and start a nano reef. What are some recommendations with lighting? Do people usually have hoods or just leave it open with the light?

That light is cheap and great for a starter, you could keep a great variety of corals with that.

For bulbs go with 1 white/1 Blue, and 10K, 14K, or 20K for the whites. 10K is a nice crisp white, while the others are a cooler/bluer white
