Male or female? -ctenopoma leopard

I tried to get a decent picture of the gill plates

If you know what to look for with the identification, any opinions are much appreciated

They're still fairly young, maybe 8 months
... Would you be able to sex them that young?

Leopard Ctenopoma profile

According to this, the males have gill spines. From what I am seeing, having never kept this fish before, it appears that you may have a few spines. My guess would be male.

Can we get confirmation?
