I was going to get some driftwood for a new tank, and I really like how the manzanite driftwood looks especially from this site Manzanita-Driftwood.com, but then I realized It has really spiky twigs. Is that liable to damage a comet goldfish's tail? I know you aren't supposed to have spiky stuff with bettas so I wanted to check before I got any. Wood, that is, not bettas

That stuff looks awfully thorny and spikey. A comet's long, flowy fins would be snagged pretty easily, especially darting about the tank. If your seeking dw, I would look for something rounded without the thorns and spikes to prevent any possible injury.
