Marina s15 slim filter

have been using a Marina slim filter s15 for a while now but still have think I am having problem with it! if anyone else can help me I would be much appreciated

how far up does the water need to be in the filter container?
how do you know when to change the filter pads?
does the tube sit at the front if the canister(in the slots) or the back (water trickles down outside of the tube)

can the filter make ammonia high?

it just needs enough water put in the filter to start up. dont change the pads until they fall apart. not sure if it needs to be in the back, but im sure it does. and no, a filter cant, it should take the ammonia out when the water passes through, unless its too small of a filter for the tank.
