Metal halides on a planted turtle tank?

So im puttin together a 75 planted turtle tank. The halides are from an old reef set up. The halides put off some heat. Good for the turtle. But is 300w of halides too much for the turtle and plants? They are supposed to replicate the sun after all...
 
They could work as a basking light but I'd check the temp at the basking area to be sure it's not too hot. MH put off a lot of light, so you may have algae issues unless you can limit the lighting or add supplemental co2.
