My first mystery death. :(

My cleaner shrimp died today. He was fine (active) yesterday. Checked everything that I can test for and all is well. All other inhabitants appear normal. I looked him over for any signs of physical trauma and I didn't see any. I'd had him for a month or two. My tank has been up for about 6 months and this is my first death (other than the usual turbo snail falling or hermits attacking eachother for shells).

Are you absolutely sure it isn't the molted shell of the cleaner shrimp you are seeing?

It is very possible it is a molt. Once they shed they will hide for a few days to let their new shell harden. It looks very much like the real thing.

Yes, I've seen molts. 100% sure it was not a molt. I actually watched as he was feebly trying to stand up for a bit and then he just fell over and was lying on his side.
