From what I've read it's a matter of luck - some will school together some won't.

Edit: quickly did a search, seems they do school together more often than not

So if I add 3 cardinals with the 4 neons i have now the cardinals won't be lonely?

EDIT: My neons have red gills some look sunken in. Are they sick?

Yes. They are very sick. I'd do a massive water change and add some stressguard along with prime in the new water ASAP.

That's probably amonia burn right?

Hard to tell without seeing them- the red gills could be toxic water, but it could be gill flukes-especially if they have sunken bellies (a sure sign of parasites in an otherwise well fed fish)

Eduguy, can you post a picture? I don't think I've ever seen sunken in bellies.

I mean gills not stomach. Fully cycled tank for long while. No gasping for air so probably no ammonia.
