It works on the same concept as siliconing two pieces of glass together to make the tank. You don't see people putting silicone on the ends of the tank glass and then 'smooshing' them together.

That is exactly how it is done. The filets in the tank are extra, and if the tank is properly assembled, redundant.

Well, the glass and silicone should last 10 years too, but some times it doesn't. I don't get your point.
