Questions, of course!!

I'm considering my lighting options. At some point, I'd like to go planted, so I'd like to leave that option open. I'd prefer to avoid adding CO2, but would consider Excel. So ultimately I'm looking at low light plants. With that in mind...any light suggestions to provide plenty of light that wouldn't be overkill? I don't want to over-light to the point that I can't have plants without adding CO2.

Secondly, filters. I've only had HOB filters before. I'm reading much about canister filters and how much better they are, and I like the idea. Suggestions for a community tank that most likely won't have plants at the beginning? Also, suggestions for media? I'm completely new to canisters.

Thanks all. Will update as I build and there will be plenty of pictures as soon as there's something besides an empty aquarium to look at! Cycling begins as soon as I settle on my substrate...so many choices...

Well I'm looking at the Rena XP2, and a Hydor inline heater. ANY opinion on lighting? It's all rather confusing. I like the idea of LEDs, but will I never be able to grow anything?

How tall is the tank?

LEDs, not so much unless you get the right LEDs but it get very expensive to start out. Of course, you don't have to replace the bulbs every year so it does save money in the long run.
