I've been wanting wilds for a lonnng time now and i finnaly got some! :D :D :D I got a pair of b. Simplex, which is a mouthbrooder, and 4 young b. smaragdina which are bubblenesters. They are all sooo cute and I can't wait to breed them, especially the simplex as i've never had mouthbrooders before. The simplex are in th tank below, and the smaragdina are in a growout tank. Sorry about the bad pics, there really speedy and my camera was dieing on me  But i'll get some better ones once they settle in better and are coloured up more.

Wow! Very nice! Are you going to attempt to breed them? I'm guessing that you are, but just curious :)

An t-iasg,

Pick up a copy of Bettas by Robert J. Goldstein, Ph.D.
It has ALOT of great info on all kinds of bettas and a large section on the mouthbrooders.
I got my copy at petsmart.
:D

Well, i'll attempt to breed them that is. Smaragdina are pretty much the same as splendens. But as far as i know with simplex is that they just decide for themselves whens the right time (and hopfully there will be aright time!!)

Smaragdina are similar to splendens, but no more similar than imbellis (which I do have) are, really. The simplex are interesting...I wouldn't mind some for a companion tank to my B. pugnax group.

What are pugnax like? Are they shy?

Yes, and no...they are cryptic much of the time, hanging out in and under plants, wood, etc....they are big (get to 4"..mine are 3") and hit food like hungry oscars. They are also a stream-dweller (probably hence the adaption to mouth-brooding), so I give mine some slow current.

bettacove, i wish you luck on your adventure! :) i can't wait to watch your progress. and to see those mouthbrooders! never heard of them.

Little update:

The simplex have spawned 3 times so far, and 3 times the male has swallowed the eggs  They are getting all flirty again so this time iam going to try something else. I'll remove her after they spawn and leave the lights on 24/7, last time I left the lights on and he held them for a while but then the power went off and no more eggs :(
Heres some pics:
