What is the point of an hob over flow box? Can't I just use a siphon in the tank to get water from tank to sump?

U need the box so it.don't loose its prime in a power outage and then overflow yur tank when power comes on

+1 there are many purposes of an overflow box. the main reason for an OF box is to prevent flooding of your sump, if you return pump loses power the water will only drain down to the top of the OF box. another reason for an OF box is for surface skimming and another is so that fishies dont get sucked up into the drain.. if you do a quick internet search you'll find a whole lot more info on OF boxes and their purpose

In addition to what was mentioned above, an overflow box will only drain the amount of water that is pushed back into the tank by the return pump in the sump. A straight siphon will drain the tank at a constant rate no matter what the return pump in the sump is doing, which can lead to either an empty sump or a flooded sump.

Pretty much same thing I said but I put it short and simple bottom line u need the overflow box ...
