If its an unglazed terracotta pot and it hasn't been into contact with pesticides it's completely safe.

There are lots of people that even use the terra cotta pots for planting in their tanks. They make great caves too.

I would avoid them yes
They are dirt cheap at Walmart anyways anywhere from 99 cents up to 3.99 depending in the size you want

Same here. Good cheap caves. I used a 2 inch tile hole saw to knock out the bottoms of some of them. Heres an older pic of one of my tanks.
