Protein Skimmer Disconnected or on Timer?

I have seen references to not running the Protein Skimmer 24-7 or else connecting it to a timer because of the noise issue. Has anyone tried this? Thoughts? I haven't bought my skimmer, but am very constrained in my choice because I have a Clear for Life Uniquarium, and the LFS warned me that the skimmer that is compatible is noisy. Thanks!
