can you add them to a tank, if so what do I need to do to make it safe......

They are mostly calcium carbonate and the will raise you KH. This may or may not matter depending on your water and fish.

How does one go about testing a shell to see if it's freshwater or salt?

I've had a couple of small bags of shells given to me, some shiny, some dull that I would like to use.

Thankx
Rick

It doesn't matter if the shell came from FW or SW, it'll have the same effects on the water reguardless.

Although shells will affect water hardness, in a big tank with one or two shells, you will not see much--if any difference.

If adding Sea Shells to a fresh water tank, make sure you clean them with plenty of freshwater...a friend of mines daughter, collected some shells from the beach went home and put them stright in the tank, lost 7 goldfish.
