I would try it but I'd look to have a male and female or even a trio, this way of they pair they will act as one fish. I don't see why red tails get that bad of a reputation for being overly aggressive, given the proper sized tank and habitat they're relatively peaceful. It's when they're added to a small tank which does not allow them to claim their territory that they start to act out.
My 2 rams seem fine in a 55 with my dwarf gourami, not sure about the red tail. They like their space so have plenty of room and hiding places. I have a cichlid stone cave that the rams take refuge in when they want peace and quiet
