Sorry about that. I wasn't very clear. That should have been two seperate questions. The first was a question about the bright red spikey things towards to top of the rock. I found a picture of what I think is them. Foraminiferans. The second question should have read: Is there a red coraline algea of will this purple?

Yep. Foraminiferans. Typical in the aquarium. Hard like coralline, and they come and go as nutrients are available.
