replenishing sand

how do i go about replenishing my sand bed? after a bout with some algae (moved ph's to dead spots, got ro/di up and running again, lowered lighting periods) ive depleted my sand bed. everytime i do a water change, i also try to get rid of the larger grain "ls" that is in there. i believe its contributing to some problems. how often should i add new sand without disturbing the inhabitants of the tank? pvc/bowl method best?

I would go with the PVC and just add some as you can.

I used a bowl. You can add it anytime, I would try not to bury too much algae....
