They're usually used as dithers for larger aggressive cichlids. Due to their frightful nature anything that isn't fast moving and causing them to freak out is okay. If you were planning on keeping plants....don't. They'll devour anything that even resembles a leaf. Just be sure to keep them in a good sized shoal and have a pretty large tank in case they do freak out and to give them room to zip around in.
