do i need a protien skimmer for my tank? or would a xp3 be good enough for everything. (normal 55g tank)

If you are talking FW. A protein skimmer will not even work. The xp3 would be a fine filter choice.

I agree with Rich. A protein skimmer is essentially useless on a fw tank.

well im making my purchase right now on bigals (well tryin to anyways, it got stuck on the review page so im trying a different browser)

a few people try to use skimmers on FW. they'll work better on brackish water.
the problem with FW protein skimming is the water lacks proper surface tension due to lack of salt, so it won't foam properly, and little to no protein/organics are removed.
Some people do run a Surface skimmer on their FW tank. This is like a pool or hot tub skimmer...its just grabbing floating debris from the top 1" of water...leaves, food, etc. Very very different from protein skimming.
