Aquarium Advice Freak
Scientific Name: (Cottus cognatus)
Common Name: Slimy Sculpin
Category: Scleroparei
Genus: Cottus
Origin: Slimy Sculpins are native from Alaska throughout Canada into the Northeast. The range extends south to Western Montana and the Idaho Panhandle.
Ecosystem: Cold water streams and rivers that contain lots of DO.
Salinity: Freshwater and Brackish
Temperament: Peaceful with any fish its own size of larger.
Diet: Ambush predators that will feed on anything that will fit in there large mouths. That includes small fish, Fish eggs, small frogs, and insects. In the aquarium they will eat pellets, feeder shrimp and frozen foods.
Care: Before we should jump into care we should talk about how to find this fish. If you don't live in the range that the fish lives in you might be out of luck because the only real way to catch them is to get your feet wet and have fun. To do this get a landing net and place that on the rapids and kick. You should come up with a few. Please check local laws about keeping native fish before you go out and steal fish from the stream. And never return fish back into a ecosystem as the fish might kill of the existing fish in the stream.
pH: pH should recreate the natural environment with it being around 6.0 to 8.2
Hardness: As I Said with recreating the natural environment with softer water
Temperature: Cold water around sixty degrees works great with and lots of DO
Size: 3 inches
Water Region: Bottom
Lifespan: 8 years
Color: Sandy color to resemble to rocky streams
Mouth: Facing upward
Acclamation: Once collected make sure that there is enough DO and as there is in bucket
breeding: Breeds in cold waters below 60 degrees in spring.
I hope you have fun catching and caring for your slimy Sculpin but always check local laws before you have a piece of nature in your home.
