styrofoam base?

Got a 40 ish gallon hexagonal acrylic with a handmade base (sturdy, hex made of cherrywood) - some recommend styrofoam under tanks - is it necessary because it looks bad - styrofoam never cuts clean anyway - any alternatives?

You could use a yoga mat or shelf liner instead.
