Can anyone help with a substrate problem I have. I have Oliver Knott substrate which has been in my tank for 4-5 years now but over recent months I have noticed it is breaking down and quite grainy.

Sediment builds up in bits of the tank from it and it the bottom dwellers stir it up which causes the tank to get cloudy.

Is there anything I can do which doesn't involve replacing it. I have tried siphoning the dustier looking parts but stirs up as much as it cleans up

I'm not too familiar with that brand of substrate, but as for those types that do breakdown over time, one option is to cap it with another substrate of your choice as mentioned here. I wish the fine grain version of ecocomplete was still available. That would be my choice as a cap. There are other fine volcanic substrates available as well as sand.
