The plan

The plan, (so far; I'm still researching), for my first aquarium ever :

1. 15 gallon tank 24" w x12" d x 12" H. This is the largest my apartment can support; I have limited space.
2. Plants!
3. Organic soil for the plants.
4. Estes Marine Sand to keep the soil down where it belongs, in black because it's cool.
5. NO CO2
6. Medium to low light. (See 4 above)
7. 6-10 Cardinal Tetras and a male Betta.
8. Natural as well as full spectrum bulbs for lighting.

That sounds like a fine plan. The marine sand may effect your hardness you might want to go with an inert black sand.
