Upgraded to Fluval 407 - question on intake valve and ribbed hose

Hello,
I recently setup a 75G freshwater tank and was sold an inadequate pump (Fluval 107). I cycle the tank for 4 weeks before adding fish. I VERY slowly started to populate the tank @ 8 weeks, and realized the inadequacy. I just upgraded to a Fluval 407. Yes, I am mortified and embarrassed by my stupidity. Judgement deserved.

The 407 intake valve is noticeably larger. I have very small baby rice fish and am concerned they will be in danger. My question: Can I keep the smaller 107 valve/tubing on the 407 pump for now until the babies are larger? or what is recommended?

Simply add an intake sponge over the intake to protect the fish from getting sucked in. Lot's on Amazon:
