They will survie for even a couple of years in FW but should be able to surviev for 15 years or so in proper conditions. Unfortunatley most people get excited if their pet fish lasts for a year or 2. They think they are doing a great job.
I bought some Dwarf Puffers at WalMart a few years back. I had done some research (at the time WalMart was the only store in the tiny town I lived in that had fish) and thought I could keep them but by the time i bought them they were too far gone. They had been feeding them flake food and the poor things were so starved they couldn't live for more than a few weeks in my tank. They also called them community fish, lol.
