Water change and water tests

Hi all, we have a 29g tank and a penguin 200 filter. What is an appropriate length of time to do a water test after a water change? Due to a spike in nitrates, we have had to do a couple big water changes to bring it down. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!
