Wet/Dry Filter on a reef tank

Are they really that bad? If I remove the Bio balls, what can I put in it's place? I won this filter from Eshopps so I do want to use it. How can it become a nitrate factory if I keep it clean?

They are old school using bio balls, but they work. I prefer using rock rubble rather that the plastic balls. They can become nitrate factories when they get old, but that's when you dump them out and add new rubble with a bit of the old rubble mixed in.

So just get some live rock rubble or dry rock rubble instead?
