What can plants do for your aquarium??

I may get a couple java ferns for my 30g tank. I have heard plants act as a living filter, removing ammonia from the water. Is that true? I'm trying to make water quality my top priority and I've heard that plants can keep levels down.

Yes, plants eat ammonia. You need a lot of them to do it sufficiently, though, and fast growing species. Ferns are typically slow growers and don't do a whole lot in that regard.

What are some fast growers, that are easy to care for?

Anacharis/egeria densa, hornwort, water wisteria and other hygro species, water sprite are all good choices. There are several that work well.
