What is brackish water

It is where fresh and salt water mix together giving you a low salinity. For example the Chesapeake bay is brackish. Many brackish species can survive in both salt and fresh due to being submitted to both in nature. Some common aquarium brackish fish are mudskippers, scats, green spot puffers, figure 8 puffers, monos, fiddler crabs, dragon gobies, bumbleebee gobies, etc...

I keep my Livebearers in brackish water. Mollies especially are partial to water with a trace of standard aquarium salt in it. Most aquarium fish will do well with a bit of standard aquarium salt, Kosher or even commercial canning salt. I use a teaspoon in every 5 gallons of my replacement water.

Brackish water is a pretty broad term. It means the water has more salt than fresh, but less than sea water. Brackish water can have .5 grams of salt per quart, up to 30 grams.
