Why over stock your mbuna tank?

Mbuna have incredible popultion densities in and amongst the rocks in the wild. Mbuna in lightly stocked tanks hide, a lack of fish may indicate that predators are around and to be careful.

Clearly the whole lake is not this heavily stocked, but when fish gather they feel safer in numbers.

This is why some people prefer to run large sumps for filtration. This increases the effective volume of the tank, therefore the nitrates are more dilute than with just canisters.
 
I just wanted to point out that mbuna cichlids don't mind it being crowded. And that overstocking in this case is related to water quality, filtration and pwcs.
