Yesterday I added some fish food in there to create ammonia, but it was AFTER I test the result. Ammonia was .25ppm, ph was 7.8, nitrite and nitrate was 0ppm. As of now the nitrate and ph raised and ammonia dropped to 0ppm. Nitrate is 20ppm and ph jumped to 8.2 and nitrite is 0ppm. Is this normal? Or what is happening? Also I just added 3 damsels that I got for free.

So, you added an ammonia source after you put in live fish, is that correct?
Have you been cycling for awhile? Ammonia is supposed to go away and get turned into nitrite and then nitrate.

No i put the ammonia source first, then I got the damsels after that day. After adding them to the tank I test the water and only see nitrate.

Sounds like the small amount of ammonia being produced is being processed quickly into nitrate, which means nitrification (cycling) is taking place

What is your SG of your tank? Damsels my go into brackish water but they dont live there.

My sg is 12, planning on raising it to 16 for now till it's cycled then lower it to 1.005 slowly
