Black neons or glowlight tetras. Black skirts would also work. Neons are hardy if the stock is good, but angelfish might eat them as they do in the wild.

How about you go to your LFS and look at what fish you like. Come back here and ask if they are suitable. Another great thing to do is research! The more you can research in this hobby the better :)

While a 55 is large enough for 6 angels, it is unlikely that you will be able to keep 6 without problems. Most fish will tolerate a fairly large pH range. Africans do not need a pH of 8+. If you want some colourful, active, non cichlids, consider rainbows. There are many to choose from some are quite colourful, and some get to a decent size.

If you are just considering shoaling species, not just tetras then I would recommend Cherry Barbs. Attractive, peaceful and stay fairly small. If you are after tetras then, lemon tetras are quite nice and hardy. Not sure whether they will survive cycling. I used to have them and loved them, but I don't know if they are suitable for cycling because I got them later on. I think glowlights and black neons were mentioned.

Hope this helps :)

IMO i would get some type of peaceful cichlid (there are sooooooo many to choose from, its hard to rule them out completely) and some community fish OR african cichlids. just wondering, why dont you want cichlids?

Cichlids are expensive and really hard to keep... but if you found a way for inexpensive filtration and a way to stabilize the PH, let me know...

Like mentioned before ph isn't a factor unless dealing with African cichlids
& I don't think cheaping out on filtration is such a good idea
You appear not to focus on what certain ppl are saying or suggestions
Also in your original post you said you were cycled already, are you or not cycled yet?

You can get 2 sponge filters and set them up in a tank rather cheaply. They are one of the least expensive means of filtration and basically provide a media for beneficial bacterial to live in. This means you will be doing more maintenance in the tank if you go with sponge filters however. I like them and use them in my growout tanks.

Well as fish come, African's aren't overly expensive so long as their bought young. 5 Dollars a fish may seem expensive at first, but some stores can cut you a deal if you buy a large amount of them. As well, once you get longer into the keeping business, 5 dollar fish start to seem pretty good XD

No, what I mean is that their care is expensive. You can't go cheap on filtration, and if you do, they require even larger water changes,as if they were not crazy enough.

IMO you shouldn't go cheap on any filtration, fish keeping is an expensive hobby.
