I went to petco today and bought 5 gold gouramis, 3 red tail sharks, l and 15 tiger barbs.

Did you guys have a heart attack? I'm just kidding! I actually didn't buy any fish. Just a zebra nerite snail. Zoe needed help with the algae in the tank. Ive reduced my lighting to 9-10 hours a day. Other than that nothing new to report. I love zebra nerites. Too bad they won't breed in freshwater. I wouldn't mind a hundred of them!

I read through your thread and reached this post and had a heart attack. LOL. I love nerites too! I don't actually have any advice to give, lol.

I've been a bit impulsive on getting fish so I thought it would give everyone a good laugh, and then they'd be proud that I only bought a snail. :)

Wow, I did a double-take when I saw this post. Freaking me out. And I'm guessing there is no change in the fish?

No change in my fish. :) They are all doing well! I guess there is one change- I think one of my hi fin variatus is pregnant. She's looking a little more rotund in the belly.

Congratulations! I hope you get lots of pretty fry ;)

Two might be pregnant! Geez, I'll have tons of fry.

One a different note, 2 days ago my Anubias was pretty well covered in algae. I set my little nerite on it, and figured it probably wouldn't get all the leaves. Today when I was cleaning I noticed that- holy cow! That little snail cleaned every. Single. Leaf. And did a darn good job at it too!

Two?! Man, that male is busy! Are you prepared?

Yeah, I heard that Nerites are quite the little algae-eaters, I may get some eventually.

Get some sooner rather than later! They are awesome and pretty to look at.

Since my petco won't take trades for store credit I was not too worried about keeping the fry. It will be survival of the fittest in my tank I guess.

I'll check 'em out! They sound pretty cool. I'm brushing up on my knowledge of Nerites...

My experience so far- they don't eat plants, they eat algae, they won't have baby explosions, and they are pretty. They must get enough to eat out of my tank. I drop a piece of algae wafer in once a week but the fish and shrimp usually eat it. I should get another nerite this weekend...

Well, I think I'm going to try adding 8 more neon tetras to my tank this Sunday or Monday. Since I only have 4 in my tank I need more. I'm hoping that if I drip acclimate the little guys for an hour or longer and add them to the tank and leave the lights off all night that I will have minimum loss. I really would like zero loss...

**EDIT** my water mixing questions will be in a new thread entitled "mixing RO and tap water ??'s"

But I was also wondering- What if I add one gallon of RO water a day until Monday. That would be 4 gallons of RO. Would that lower my pH slowly or would I need to add 1 gallon a day for like- 7 days? My thought on this is- lower the pH very slowly. Get it to like 7.0 or 7.5 then a few days after I add the new fish begin raising the pH slowly by adding 1 gallon of my tap water for 7 days to bring it back up to my normal ph of 8.0. Or should I not worry about adding tap water every day and just do a 10 gallon pwc a week after I add the new fish? Would that raise my pH too quickly?

It seems like the water hardness and pH are the big problem for my new fish. Its the only explanation since all my other param's are fine. Would this work? I don't want to kill any more fish. Plus if the petco gets more Rummies I really want to get some more. Lower pH and alk would make the environment more inhabitable for them.

More of what's going through my head- I do a pwc every week of about 10 gallons. If I used 5 gallons tap and 5 gallons RO when I refill do you guys think that would be ok? If I only need 5 gals of RO a week I can do that. It's $0.39 a gallon at yokes. And if I decide to do water changes this way then I wouldn't have to worry about the last step in the process I mentioned above (adding a gallon of tap water a day). Over time I would eventually have a tank that is half RO and half well water. I think it would help lower my high pH, natural nitrates of 40-80, and my alkalinity and by doing that every week it would stay constant.

What is y'alls opinion on this?
Personally, you shouldn't add so many fish at once. 4-5 Neons is what you should get. 7 days after you get 4-5 of them, you can get the remaining 3-4. I have not used RO water, I would seek some accurate advice on this from an expert.

Getting five at a time is easier on my pocket book. :)

lol yeah it would be on mine, too. Just keep an eye on the ammonia after you add them. It may spike because you added too many fish too close together. I don't think you'll have a problem with it, but it's not a bad idea IMO.

I think what I'm going to do is hold off on more neons until I get opinions on the thread I'm about to start on mixing RO and tap water. That should give my tank time to make sure the BB has built up since my last new fish addition.

Sounds like a good plan. I personally like the Neons are da best. Time, patience. That's what this hobby is all about. I'll monitor your other thread. I hope I have helped you out a little bit!

You've helped me alot! I like the neons, but my favorites are the rummynose. What I really want is 6 or 7 more of them. I just don't know if I can get them. Once I get my neon school straightened out I might have to give in and order some Rummies online. Shipping is so expensive though.

I don't see a problem in adding that many neons at one time. They are so small and have such a small bioload that they shouldn't cause an ammo spike, IMO.
