Fish that should NOT be sold... or at least should come with a legal disclaimer.

The friendliest place on the web for anyone with an interest in aquariums or fish keeping!

No but if it was stunted previously I ment, maybe they rescued it?? Or maybe just genetically a small one

In a way I feel common plecos. I think they should still be sold just the shop employees should let people know how big the tanks should be .

It'd be nice to see them phase out baby common plecos and put the smaller species in their place. Carrying common plecos isn't a bad thing, but at least sell some that are 5-6"+ so people get an idea of what they are getting into.

As far as cramming alot of danios in a small tank, its normal protocol for LFS to do this. Most use a regular water change routine or a centralized filtration system so water quality doesn't suffer, and keeping fish heavily stocked also reduces aggression issues. Stunting isn't as much of an issue with smaller community type fish as it is with something like large cichlids.

Yeah thats what I mean. At least give the person info on hoe big they get.

I don't think they should be banned I just think you should have to prove you can house them, I have an rtc but he is going into a 2000g next summer so he is never going to be cramped, but it happens to often people buy a fish a few inches and don't realise they can grow so huge! There should Defo be rules to fish purchase IMO

I never said they should be banned my point was for people to tell the buyers of how big they get.

A 4' eel can be properly housed in a much smaller tank than a 2' fish. They are often kept in too small of tanks, but they aren't as troubling to me as other much more common pet store fish. JMO

Betta kits should not be sold! Just picked up my daughters malebetta and was asked if I wanted a Betta kit no bigger then those stupid littlebowls, I snorted back I have a 5 gallon tank for that little keeper in the bag and walked out

I agree. There are some kits that are less than half a gallon. Not suitable. Bettas need at least 1.5 gallons. I can't believe people actually buy those. It's like those tiny turtle islands.

Agreed, but that is a decidedly different topic than the topic of this thread.

I agree there hn1 but I look at it as when a store puts a Betta in a round bowl and society falls to the image that that is safe for the fish does that not fall under the topic of fish that should not be sold?

Here's the difference between that and monster fish IMO.... While most often inappropriately kept, bettas are pretty much adults when sold and the buyers have an idea of how big they get. The fact that they often put them in vases and bowls is due to ignorance primarily. On the other hand, if shops sold Common plecs, or ID sharks, or RTCs, or a host of other fish at close to max size; no one would buy them because it would be obvious that they could not house them. Feel free to make a new thread on a different topic, but the topic of this thread is basically fish that get too large for most private aquaria.

That's exactly what I said when they asked me that the other day at the lfs haha.

Oh I agree that If shops sold fish at adult size they wouldn't be purchased. Now on the other hand Gould we not blame the distributors/suppliers also for attributing to the trend? For If not for them the stores would have no supply. For I do agree that fish that outgrow home aquariums should be kept in their natural environment or be sold primarily via special order only that way they dont become victims of retail revenue.

I thought of 2 fish that need disclaimers
- Black Ghost Knife fish can get to 20"
- Kissing Gouramis can get to 11" and people put them into a small 20 gal
Just my additions :D

So its the distributors and suppliers fault that consumers are ignorant?
