Ever since my friend over fed my betta he's been sick. By over fed I mean a PILE of food on the bottom of the tank. I got most of it out did water changes and even added some plants. I think he has ammonia poisoning. He has red gills and fins. I've been adding a few grains of disolved aquarium salt to his water along with raising the temp to about 75 as suggested on other websites. Please is there anything else I can do?

Extra clean water will help. What are your parameters as of now? What size tank is he in? It does sound like ammonia poisoning to me.

As of now? I'll check in abit. Gotta let my hands warm up first. Just ran to my friends house to get my weekly water supply. I have high nitrates in my tap so I cant use it. Got 28gals. I have a 37gal tank also. He's in a gal bowl with no filter :( bad I know I've been working on getting a 5gal cycled for him but the water doesnt look right. I kinda want to clean it and start over. Its got a weird slime over the top. I had a frog in it a few months back and I guess I didnt clean it well enough.

Well you know what's going to be said, he needs a filter but I won't lecture you about that lol do you happen to have an extra filter?

I have an extra filter pad but not an actual, wait. I have a 40gal subbmersible filter in my 37gal. It has nitrate removing filter media in it right now.

This is the film. Is it biofilm?

That I don't know. Sorry. Since you don't have a filter for the bowl I would do small water changes throughout the day. You do have a heater? When you do your water changes do small ones, temperAture check the water, and use your water conditioner. Feed very lightly. Is he eating? If not, try adding some garlic to his food to get his immune system up.

PH-7.2
Ammonia-0ppms
Nitrite-0-.25ppms. It has a little color but not purple
Nitrate-5.0ppms
I have been doing very small water changes every day for the past few days as he didnt look like he was feeling well. Should I test the five gal now? What should I do with it? Idk if its safe.

Test your 5g. Are any of your tanks cycled? If you think you have any nitrites you need to do water changes till its 0

My 37gal is cycled. I had my 5gal filter set up in there for momths getting the bacteria growing. Thats the filter thats now in the 5gal. I'll test it in a second just puried some garlic to feed him.

About to test the water. He wasnt interested in the garlic. And he's swimming kinda weird now. I think he has sticky fins. I think thats what its called. I use aq salt to teat that right?

He has clamped fins. Is his breathing labored? Are both gills moving? Any sign of ich, pine coning? Could you get a picture maybe? If you're going to use salt it's 1 teaspoon per 2 1/2gallon. Make sure your dissolving it and not dumping it in the water.

I know there terrible photos but he is so tiny. Barely an inch. A few cm long at the most. The clearest one for color was taken in a glass cup I put him in so I could get a better look at him but its all distorted because of the glass cup.

Just to give you an idea of his tinyness thats my pointer finger there and I wear a size 4 ring.

Well I had to say dissolved. When I first started (what a disaster that was) I just dumped it into my goldfish tank. So I just have to assume that people are as dumb as I am lol

Anyways, the pictures doesn't really help much so I'll need your eyes. Does he look like he has raised scales(like a pine cone)

It doesnt look like dropsy. I've fought tthat battle once, and lost (pond koi not an indoor fish). Although there does appear to be a white fuzzy spot on his side. Some sort of fungus?

So this is either a very good sign or a very bad sign. Ammonia is zero same with nitrites. Nitrates around 20ppms. Ph is 7.2. Either the tank is fully cycled in the week its been setup or it hasnt done anything yet. The nitrates are probubly due to my tap water. I didnt have enough water to fill it all the way and had to add some. I did throw in a bunch of goldfish flakes which I can see rotting at the bottom would that cause ammonia?

Yes you are right, it's a fungus more than likely. We need to get rid of it as quick as possible because it will eat him alive. When you decide if the 5g is suitable ( which at this point really needs to be) just give him completely new water. Acclimate him slowly. Fungus is brought in by stress. So I can't stress it enough to do it slowly. Add your salt to your water (1 teaspoon to 2 1/2 g) and I'd add some Stresscoat if you have any. If your tank isn't cycled, it will have to have extremely clean water all the time. Did you ever test that water?
