I know the feeling my 55g cichlid tank has been the same way for me I was happy with it 2 outta 12 rescapes. LoL
 
How about a marimo moss ball carpet? Still use the anubias and needle leaf java? Maybe Some peacock moss or xmas mos on some of the branches?

Here's an example of the moss carpet... You can shape it to still preserve some of the surrounding sandy area.

That is an awesome idea how would you go about making a carpet from them though?

Very carefully :)

You'll need weights for them. I did a little of that (not as successfully as that picture) in my 10g RCS tank. They always try and float up.

Okay guys, can we get back to the 12 long talk...?

How can I wage full blown warfare on this hair algae??? Spot treat? Black out? Cut all the blyxa out??? I've been wait for this blyxa to grow in and now it's almost there but just covered in hair!

Shall I just nuke the tank with excel??? :lol:
 
Can you describe this hair algae? I get confused with green then there's brown hair algae...then string or thread algae..and then God-awful Spirogyra algae. I find that all these various algae get confused with one another. Either way, I'd start with Excel first and reduced lighting.

It's dark green.

I'm thinking about yanking up all the blyxa and giving it a peroxide bath...

Okay, so this is what the algae looks like... Best pics I could get with my phone, sorry guys. I'm assuming its BBA.

I finally got around to cleaning the tank today. Gonna get back in to my dosing and maintenance routine... I overdosed with excel today(2 capfuls) after my water change. I guess I'll just start spot treating everyday, and try to balance the tank again. I also cut my lights down to only four hours a day. If I don't see any improvements, I'll have to pull the plants out for a dip.

Also, it's very odd, the blyxa on the left side of the tank is going mad, while the right side is fairly slow growing...

Edit: now that I look at the par charts, I think I might have actually been better off with the fugeray for this shallow tank rather than the ray 2. The fugeray would still have me in the high light range, just not as high as I have now... It's ridiculous that I can't run my lights for more than 5 hours.

Yeah I think the FugeRay might have been a good idea. OR... you can think about elevating the Ray 2 somehow. I know you're not interested in a suspension style because we went over that already... but how about elevating it by using acrylic? Check out this thread and look how ramawo elevated the Finnex fixtures...

Yes, your algae looks like BBA... you can spot treat with H202 too... it will fizz that stuff up real quick.

Meh... I'm not really diggin the acrylic either... I guess I'm just screwed... :lol:

Funny, I am on the other side of the fence with a FugeRay wondering if I should have gone with the Ray2. But I wanted to keep it as low tech as possible. And algae can be a problem with the FugeRay if not properly managed.

Regarding the elevation, I built something similar for a rimmed tank.

Ignore the floating stuff. I did not do it for the light intensity (actually the floating plants offer shade but they go where they want and not necessarily where I want them). I did not like how the Finnex mounts attached to the standard rim. I can still slide a hinged glass lid in there if necessary.
 
I had a what sounds like the same algae you have/ had. Thin long green hair like algae and the thing that worked with it was turning off my filter, do my water change, I took syringe and sprayed the H2O2 over the infected areas making sure not to go over the recomended amount, waited fifteen minutes, then refilled the tank, and turned on the pump. I had to do it two to three times and never saw it again since!
