I managed to rotate the driftwood to about 45 degrees. Here's an updated full tank shot. I like it better now.

Or you could be like me and somehow kill your java moss dead.

Brookster, where did you find mini fissidens? I hear that's a pretty sweet little moss...

Another update: Corrected my rookie mistake and returned the green tiger barbs I got a few weeks ago. They were just too aggressive and big for my tank. Traded then for three platys. Everyone is behaving much calmer now and the white clouds are actually venturing down to the middle of the tank now.

And in bigger news, I wasn't happy with the flow and filtering capacity of my AC 50 so I upgraded to The Beast, AKA the AC 70. It rattled and buzzed like heck at first, as all new ACs seem to do for me, but I tried the vaseline trick and that seems to be working so far. The out flow is just awesome. I've even turned off my nano circulation pump on the other side of the tank since it seemed to be too much turbulence for the inhabitants. As long as the buzzing doesn't start again, I'm pleased.

You mean learn from my mistakes I hope! This is my first serious planted tank. My first piece of advice would be to do a 55 gallon instead if you are so inclined. Seems like every cool fish I discover needs at least 50 gallons. But a 29 is all I can fit in my house right now due to available and appropriate wall space. Dreaming of a 55 gallon cichlid tank in the future.

Felt like it was time for an update. Pics below. New AC 70 filter with Filter Max III prefilter sponge (that mother is huge!) I'm going to try snipping some of my Jungle Val runners and plant them over there to try and hide it a bit. I have some Crypt Wendtii back in that corner now, which is silly anyway. Green Tiger Barbs were returned and 3 Platys put in their place. The tank is back to being a peaceful community again.

Definite growth in the Bacopa, Staur Repens, and AR Mini. Time to trim and replant soon!

My Staur Repens, Bacopa, and the Sword are getting holey leaves. I think this was caused by being away on Vacation for 5 days and not dosing anything during that time. How often do you all dose Potassium and/or Iron? Right now, I'm just using Seachem products. Would a dose of Potassium everyday make sense and be safe? I've heard in the past that this is the most often deficient nutrient in a planted tank. Iron every other day?

I *think* it would be safe. PPS Pro dosing is daily and the macro mix contains potassium.
You should consider the dry fert route. Seachem products are not cheap and it adds up. The dry ferts are economical and you can customize the components (e.g. - more phosphate, less nitrate).

Yeah... I know I need to look into the dry stuff. I'm not very scientific at all about what and when I dose. I need to get on some kind of schedule.

Regardless of the ferts, consistency is important. Same goes for carbon. Depending on your schedule, daily PPS pro dosing might work well for you. Otherwise, Estimative Index (EI) weekly dosing could be an option.

Update 12/9/2014:

I've trimmed and replanted the Staur Repens a couple times, but as Fresh said in his thread, the older leaves on mine are looking like feces. As soon as I get some more new growth, I'll trim, pull the bottoms, and replant the good stuff. Still looks cool from a distance and I think I'll eventually be able to make an interesting "carpet" out of it.

I trimmed and replanted some of the AR Mini as well. I seem to be having really good luck with it so far.

A few more inches on the Bacopa and it will be time to cut off the bottoms and replant those as well.

The Java Moss continues to grow like crazy and make a mess, but I love it.

I finally got on a strict schedule with my ferts and I can definitely tell a difference in the new growth. Much stronger and healthier looking. I think I was way under-dosing everything before. When we go on vacation again, the whole tank is going to crash.

Going good man! I'm having the same problem with my s.repens, but I try not to look to hard at it:confused:

About the star repens, you could cut off the nicely growing upper parts and replant those. Leave the existing bottom plants in place for 1-2 weeks and they should produce new growth. Wait for the new growth to get established and then trim off the GSA covered leaves.

For anyone still following, I made some big (kinda) changes last week.

Plantwise:
I wasn't really liking the "hedge" of star repens, so I trimmed and removed the bad looking stuff. I'm going to try and keep it consolidated into one tight clump. I also trimmed the AR mini and replanted the tops. They aren't quite as red/pink as they used to be. It's probably about time I gave them some more root tabs. I completely removed some Crypt Wendtii that I had in the middle. They were healthy enough, I just never really liked the look and color of them. Plus I wanted a little more open sand on the bottom for the Cories to dig in.

Fishwise:
I donated my Zebra Danios to my LFS and got a couple more Peppered Corys to replace a couple that up and died for no apparent reason. I think these will be the last Cories I attempt. I've just lost too many over the past 6 months. I think my water is too hard for them to thrive long term. I've researched and decided that my Platys are the best accustomed to my kind of water. I'll probably try to get two more in a couple weeks (including a male, so we can see if some magic happens.)

And last but not least, this week makes it officially 1 year since I started this hobby! And I'm still here.
