Coursair does have a point though. Despite the bluntness of Coursair's statement, putting a figure 8 in a freshwater WILL shorten its life span and as fellow living things, why would we not create the most ideal environments for our companions?

I would recommend some shell-dwelling cichlids. You could do a colony of multis. They would be ok with the rainbows as long as the rainbows don't go near their shells

HOLD UP

Go with julidochromis, get like six or so and you can't go wrong. You could even breed them

Both recommendations require higher pH levels so keep that in mind. If you choose to go for Africans and have a high pH, I would go for shelldwellers. Also check compatibility with rainbows if you get the julis.

If your pH is closer to neutral or slightly acidic, gbr can be an interesting center piece. Pearl gouramis also would work.

Remember to do lots of research.

Dude I have Julis right now with rainbows at a little higher than neutral and they are doing well, hardy little buggers

I searched those up and they'd be awesome! That's just the kind of thing I'm looking for. :thanks:

I can definitely supply them with as many shells as they need (I've got a huge bucket full) and I have sand as a substrate so they can dig. I hope I can get a few of those.

To Cousair, please do not be so rude to me.

I'm not sure how I was rude ? You are the one to publicly state that you are fine if it dies young as long as it looks cool.

I guess I was startled at the casual indifference.

I didn't call you any names.

I am blunt. I type this on my phone. I can be much more eloquent if needed. You haven't seen rude from me.

I'll chose the high road and wish you luck. I choose to pick fish for my tanks that actually need the SAME conditions and that are truly compatible. My fish are more than live decorations.

Happy New Year. May the Odds be ever in your favor.

+1. I can't believe I forgot about those guys. I've never heard of them being aggressive and my lfs kept them with a pair of rams and harlequin rasboras.

Go for an Amazon puffer. They are the most community friendly of the puffers and are fully fw.

It wouldn't harass my other fish even at that size? It grows to like 5-6 inches long. It would be a great centrepiece but I'm afraid of what it could do.

I think I'll just try shell dwelling cichlids even though 95% of the reviews on the Internet are good for the f8 puffer

Yes they can get up to about 5" max size. As to how that would work, I think it'll depend a lot on the temperament of the fish, but Amazons are known for being the most peaceable of the fw puffers.

Regardless of the reviews, the F8 (and GSP) puffers are an estuarine fish that makes it's way from freshwater/brackish waters and into full marine evironment as it becomes an adult. There's no getting around the physiology of the fish. If the goal is to have a brackish/marine tank then an f8 would work out fine, but if not then it's a bad idea.

Shelldwellers are cool, I had a colony of multis for a while. I think they do best in a species tank or if the tank is large enough you can attempt other similar sized shelldwellers.

I was going to get multis but how expensive do they go for? I read that they usually sell for around $25. I'm only 13 and my parents won't let me get a fish that's over $15.

If the multis are too expensive I'll just get julidochromis which should be fine right?

Ya, I would go with the julidochromis. Since you sill have time before college you should buy like 6 and let them pair up, and I have heard once they are paired they are fairly easy to breed. They will sell for a fair amount too! Be warned tho, they take ages to grow that is why they are so expensive when they are larger

Ya I keep them in a planted tank with rainbows and angels at around neutral ph, I do do a 50% wc weekly tho which does return the hardness and ph higher since I live in city
