    Zebra danios doing poorly

Hi Everyone, I seem to have the most trouble with the fish that are supposed to be very tough. Usually it's the guppies, but this time, I am losing my zebra danios. Oddly, they are the only fish in the tank that seem to be affected. - other much more "sensitive" fishes are doing fine, including...

Third time's a charm for my proud GBR parents

My rams, which I have had for a couple of months now, have spawned twice before but without much luck. The first batch of eggs fungused and were eaten, and the second batch resulted in just a couple of relatively life-less wigglers who soon disappeared. But 3's a charm, because this time they...

    Banana Plant

Good to know - thought I was doing something wrong. :)

Name this algae, and what can I do... LOL

The only time I had problems with cyano was when I wasn't running CO2 and I had nitrate levels that were too high (40ppm). As soon as I got the nitrates down and started CO2, the cyano was gone. I also removed a lot of it manually - I had to throw out some floating plants, but I have to every...

    Starved fish

I love my Pristellas. They are very pretty and active little fishes. They are very tough tetras, I've noticed, who can tolerate a wide range of conditions. Mine spawn pretty frequently also, although, the eggs get eaten almost immediately.

    Banana Plant

Has anyone had the experience of the bananas dissolving? Mine were growing quite well, sending multiple shoots to the top, and you can actually see how much root mass they've grown (the roots are in the sand right up against the glass). Now the banana part is turning to mush, though.

    Guppy Fry Question

Depending on the strain, the sexes can be separated as early as one week, but definitely by 4 weeks. The females will have the small dark area on the abdomen (gravid spot), and the males will not. By three months, they could be breeding, so I wouldn't wait that long if you absolutely do not want...

Name this algae, and what can I do... LOL

That is exactly the kind of algae problem I am having in my tank! It's like you took a picture of my tank. I even have the algae-covered ozelot swords! Just replace the cabomba with bacopa and that's my tank. Wish I knew what it was. I had kind of assumed, since it's brownish, mushy, and pulls...

    GBR breeding set-up

Hello, First of all, which post said that your female ram's death was due to being overbred? I have two pairs of rams in my 46-gallon and one pair has spawned twice this month, so I'd like to know. I have my doubts as to whether or not that would be the case, assuming she received adequate...

Would this be a good CO2 diffuser?

I found an excellent glass diffuser for very cheap on eBay. It works very well with my DIY C02, producing very fine bubbles. Only concern might be that it produces a sound kind of like chirping birds due to the very fine bubbles. But it is really not that loud, and I can only hear it when...

Mixed up my ferts, need your help to ID them

Thanks guys, I can fertilize my tanks with confidence tomorrow. I was going to try the test kit thing but I had no idea how much to add of each to such a small quantity of water in order to get a valid test (i.e. too much and it can just precipitate out, giving a false negative result). And I...

Mixed up my ferts, need your help to ID them

Hi All, Well, I was in a hurry before I went out of town and mixed up the lids to my canisters of dry ferts. Oops! I have only been dosing them for a couple of weeks now and I can't remember which is which, but I know some lids got mixed up because the Plantex lid (the only one I know for sure)...

How to avoid nitrite spike after changing fine filter pads

I never change all the media at once. This is only referring to the very fine pads that are next to impossible to rinse, as Sherry mentioned. I can try to extend the life of the pad a little longer but the point of them is to be the final stage "water polisher," which doesn't work well when the...

How to avoid nitrite spike after changing fine filter pads

Hi All, I have begun changing my fine/micro filter pads on my canister filters every month to 5 weeks now, in accordance with manufacturer instructions, because I find that they become incredibly dirty and clogged in that time. Unfortunately, I have discovered that for the past two months, I...

hmmmm water is ok, why is fish dieing?

As an outside observer who just read this post for the first time, I would say he was laughing because there were so many replies asking for the same thing before he had a chance to reply and because some members were getting off-topic. There were at least four posts in a row all telling him to...

IM SO ANGRY!!!!! Update! part 2, found the manager

FWIW, in the US, you can call the county or city tax office and request the name and address for the owner of any business or residence. The information is considered public. I did this when I had to write a little letter to an owner about their tenants who like to party all night long on...

Sick Krib, help! (caught dropsy early on)

lyquidphyre, I know I am a little late on this one, but don't beat yourself up too badly. Usually when a fish is so weak that it can't keep from getting sucked into a filter inflow, it is already at death's door. There was probably nothing you could do. I have had the same experience, though...

    Need CO2 Diffuser Recommendation

I decided to go with the glass diffuser from eBay (slightly different from one linked above), at least until I can afford pressurized with a reactor. We'll see how it performs -- hopefully it will arrive intact and be free of defects!

    Need CO2 Diffuser Recommendation

Hello Again Everyone, I have narrowed down my DIY CO2 diffuser choices, but I am still open to suggestions. Cheap is good, but less labor is even better. The diffuser will be connected to silicone tubing from a 4-liter container. I even included a check-valve. My top choices are the Red Sea...

    Snail Attack

Hi Plant People, In spite of my best efforts, my plant tanks have been overrun with snails. I am used to dealing with a few pond snails (easy enough to pick out by hand) but in the bigger tanks, there has been an explosion of ramshorn snails. They are damaging the plants, leaving tons of snail...

color change/strange behavior in dwarf gourami

IMHO, that looks like breeding colors for an adult male. Try this link http://www.plantedtank.net/fishprofiles/Honey-Gourami-Colisa-chuna/50/ . Or this one... http://www.colisa-chuna.nl/index.html . Is that what your gourami looks like now, GlitcH? I bet it will darken even more.

    Rethinking my stocking plan...

Black Phantom Tetras, Harlequin Raspboras, and Rummynose are all beautiful schooling fish that stay relatively small, but not so small that they would disappear in your tank. I would think a group of 10 would look very nice - and the nice thing is that they actually school together, unlike some...

color change/strange behavior in dwarf gourami

I had the same initial impression, but I think based on the grammar one can gather that Weasel F. is a non-native English speaker. I think that spellcheck would have helped in conveying his/her message more clearly, but we should all appreciate the goodwill that is apparent in the research...

    Best filter type?

As a recent canister convert, here is my opinion on the advantages offered by canisters (I use them on my 25 and 46 gallon planted tanks): 1) They are extremely quiet. 2) They look nicer (i.e. less visible equipment equals a more professional look). 3) You can push the tank up much closer to...

Decline of the otos - should I attempt a post-mortem?

Well, I am sad to report that I have lost two more Otos since I began this report. These two went down fast, and didn't show the symptoms of swollen belly and crazy swimming behavior that the others did. In fact, their stomachs looked rather sunken. I had tried feeding them algae wafers soaked...
