Hi there, I need help with one of my tanks. I have a planted tank (33 gallons, aquaclear filter, new aquaglo neon) and it started to deteriorate last week. I now have brown algae and some sort of stringy stuff on the plants, they're getting brown on the edges and i also lost 2 fishes (I think)...

LFS had the same results, pwc done every week. Nothing abnormal that I know of cause I usually get informed before getting something new. I'll post a pic later today

Excellent idea, didn't think about that. But since I once had parasites in the old tank, am I taking chances in transferring the disease as well? My old fishes are ok but everytime I add a fish in the old tank the seem to die of an unknown sickness... (Hence the new tank).

I intalled another tank last week and I an now at the nitrite part of my cycle. I noticed that a product called cycle which I use when adding fishes is also supposed to sherten the nitrate period and the ammount of nitrate in the tank, helping the cycle go through. I don't recall seeing this...

Ok so adding plants is not going to bring it to 0 but it's going to affect the plants? Good thing you asked indeed. Now adding fishes will bring the nitrate up right ? I'll have to keep an eye open to watch as i plan on adding fishes then.

Nitrate level is around 5 but I won't sleep until I get it to 0. Tank is fully cycled (It's a 2 years old tank). I was also told that plants with long roots would help as well (Bamboo?) I'll go and take a look at those suggestions. My plan is to make that tank as independant as possible...

Didn't the fishes eat the remains ? Changing gravel with all the plants you have will be a pain in the a** but if you're a willing person well, why not. Black gravel will look more artificial imo(I actually did the reverse last week, changed from black to natural).

Well... Guess what? They're all ok now, after only 2 days with airstones and the introduction of a plant looking like an onion to get nitrates to 0. The rasboras were the ones breathing hard and I'll wait a few days before replacing the dead one. Thanks for the help, i'll keep u informed if...

The tank is placed so the cats cannot reach it... The choco gourami is an inch long at most and breathing ok. Danios and rasboras are brathing hard.... So my tank could be overpopulated?

Water change ... Done And the fishes are just breathing hard. As for the test kit, 6 months old, a liquid master test kit plus additions for kh gh etc.. I don't know the brand but it seems common enough (I see it everywhere)
