i have silica sand in my tank and actually have less diatoms than i did in my other tank using yardright aragonite sand...nor has anyone else i have ever talked to had a problem with diatoms using silica sand it is just part of your tank cycling.....if silica sand causes diatoms then so would...
as far as the dead ones go you could flush em or i would throw them out in the woods but i dunno if you live by any woods the live ones if you have a fuge or sump you could put them in there or maybe just see if someone else might want them
if it is 100% silicon it is gonna be the exact same thing as the "aquarium sealant" you get....it should say on the tube whether or not it is 100% silicon or not.
knife fish will happily eat your fish or anything else that it can fit in its mouth....or in the case of the shrimp sounds too me like he ate it one bite at a time
think about it this way.....in the wild fish dont get nearly as much to eat as they do in your tanks especially fish like lionfish that have to hunt down prey so feeding them once a week is prolly more than they get in the wild.
