White fringes on my Cup Mushroom

OK, hey everyone... I think I've got a problem basic parameters are right where I want them, the tank is really coming along... and everything is healthy and growing (various LPS and soft corals)... But (there's always a but...) my cup mushrooms are starting to get a little whitening right...

Calling anyone with coral please take a look to see if right

Well, I think your angle is good... but I wonder about it's depth. It doesn't need a ton of light... but I'm thinking it would open more if it were higher up in the water column. Of course, you'd need more rock to do that, hehehe... It looks healthy enough, nothing that says it's doing...

    I Got a Hitchhiker Cowrie

I'm pretty sure what wandered in on my new star polyp rock is a cowrie.. he's pretty big (just over an inch) and pretty freaky (he wears his mantle over his shell and has crazy little flower like appendages, very frightening hehehe)... So I've heard these are desireable but BAD for a reef. I'm...

Do you guys intervine or just let nature happen??

"it is gonna happen sooner or later while you're sleeping or off doing something else." hehehe, you mean you do other stuff? I intervene, I can't just sit there and watch something torment or kill something else... I've never been able to suspend my disbelief enough to think my...

Sorry about this..but I need yet more advice

I didn't see your previous post... so I'm a bit ignorant on the particulars. But from what I've read here, it doesn't sound much like precipitation. You can usualy see bits of matter in the water column when calcium precipitates. Plus as mentioned above you get what looks like salt creep all...

    Nano filtration?

for a decent spectrum the light really should be power compact. Which I believe is set for the one in your e-bay link. Which is decent for a tank that small... I wouldn't try SPS's or clams, but most LSP's and mushrooms should be OK under those conditions. You can get 50/50's at 24 watts in...

Serpent star ate a huge bristle worm!

That is funny... I wonder though, might the worm have been dead? Serpent stars are consumate scavengers. And mine never ate MY worms... hehehe p

    copepods

Bio Balls and other media cause competing bio filtration organisms to take root in a system... LR and LS do the job better than these competing bio media when stocked to the levels reefrunner suggests. Bio media is sold with a lot of tanks because not everyone uses LR and of course, in a...

    lighting.

I got the same hood in the 24" model for my 29 gallon tank! it was $125 at my LFS... Except that it comes with coralife bulbs (which I'm not a big fan of... actinics are way too "blacklightish" for my taste) it's a great little number... Seperate ballast for white and actinic bulbs on seperate...

    what kind of algae?

sounds like my Cyano... grows like mad, KILLS coraline algae on site! hehehe, no realy, my healthy LR is looking more and more like a boneyard each week as this cyano crap strangles my coraline. Haven't beat it yet... post a pic, that would help... p

I Know, Everyone has Algae Problems, but...

just as an update... my local hippie water guy (he really is a hippie) swears that they do not remineralize and that they have no measureable silicates, nitrates etc... my own tests have confirmed this... in fact, he says he has several customers who buy bulk water from him for fishkeeping...

    Bristle Worms UPDATED W/ Picture

a few years ago I broke down an 80 gal and as I pulled a big chunk of rock out a bristle worm at least that long slithered out of it!!!! Mine was really thin though (like 1/8 inch), so he might have been stretched all the way out... Funniest thing was I had NO idea I had him until that day...

Need help in Aqua C Remora skimmer

I think the best solution to the "racetrack" effect is using the surface skimmer... if you put the surface box in the water current (say in a sump, or near a powerhead) it will take in water from the current and release back into the stream... shrug p

    Temp flux (welcome to winter)

Hey, yeah, I'm in Sacramento and I have had the same problem all week.. It's the warm days COLD nights thing... I have a 350 ebo jager and 2 weeks ago I couldn't keep the tank under 80, now it's 75 in the mornings, 80 by evening... I've been playing with the temp set a bit, and it seems to...

I Know, Everyone has Algae Problems, but...

Cheers everyone... thanks for all the help... I understand that we really want to stop the cause not the condition, so I'm not going to try to medicate it. I have no corals/anemone's in this tank yet, so i'm not tooo worried about it except that it is having it's way with the fine coraline...

I Know, Everyone has Algae Problems, but...

I only checked nitrates on the source water I've been using (the aforementioned "hippie water" I'm getting from the natural foods store). In the tank amm 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 5ppm PH 8.2 It's NOT coraline... I've done this before, had a few reefs in the past... seen this stuff before, usualy...

I Know, Everyone has Algae Problems, but...

Mine is awfull... I can't win, and have no idea what's up! Here goes... It's dark maroon and if I allow it to grow it gets long strands (hair? Filament?)... it is smothering my live rock, where I clean it off the LR is bleached white, ugh. I've got some ideas about what might be causing...

    Killer Cow????

Very cute ad nearly irresistable. But if you're planning to keep corals he's a HUGE mistake. He might be the very unusual exception to the rule, but cowfish eat corals, clams, crabs etc... they jump out of the tank pretty well, and if upset enough they will exude the above mentioned toxin and...

    Temperate Tanks

Your dive buddies might get angry at you taking away some critters but fish and game won't care much as long as you don't take too much abalone. I live in NorCal and used to know someone who had a marine tank stcoked from the waters near Dillon Beach. Water, livestock... everything (he lived 2...

    My Snails Are All Comatose

Yeah, they're alive still... just not clinging to anything, and not moving much at all... I'm sure they would nopt cling to the glass for me. Oh, well... sounds like a lesson learned the hard way. I hate when a little ignorance causes something like this. Honestly I've kept 3 other tanks over...

    My Snails Are All Comatose

Cheers, thanks for the quick reply... so what now? Will they get it together or have I stupidly mangaged to kill a pack of snails? Common sense tells me I should not reomve them at this point, since that's jut going to be a greater shock... Am I right about that? p
