    Pregnant Percula Clownfish died today

Thanks HoopsGuru. I did not dissect my clownfish. Actually, I don't think I could do that personally. I think she or he came with the bacterial infection from the LFS. It always had the powder like coating on her from the start and it increased in coverage in time. I am monitoring the...

    Trimming puffer teeth

Someone should write a book on the 1001 uses of a Coolwhip container, LOL. Personally, I agree with the above post, I would be to traumatized to do this by hand. Feed them snails I say. RodneyCK

    Pregnant Percula Clownfish died today

Follow up: More information on Dropsy for others that may encounter this problem. I believe mine had the Acute Dropsy as it happened very quickly. Dropsy: Symptoms: Fish's abdomen becomes unusually large and swollen, scales may stick out resembling that of a pine cone. The fish may have...

    Pregnant Percula Clownfish died today

Thanks for the information utahcutter. It prompted me to investigate this further and I think it is an external bacterial infection. What you described is called Dropsy (bloating). I posted earlier on this forum regarding a black powder covering (looked like someone sprinkled her with soot)...

    Pregnant Percula Clownfish died today

Thanks jamal-188. I will go out this week and find him a suitable mate. They can decide which one wants to be the female/male, LOL. RodneyCK

    Pregnant Percula Clownfish died today

Yes, a sad day indeed. I had a mated pair of percula clownfish and they were doing so well. They began displaying all the signs of courtship, wiggling, head butting, and dancing under the moonlight (sorry, I added the last part). A short time later, the larger clownfish slowed down a bit and...

    freezer burn

Well I know you can not freeze BIO-spira marine, nitrifying bacteria in a bottle. According to the FAQs on their website; Q: I accidentally froze my BIO-Spira®; will it still work? A: No. Unfortunately, BIO-Spira® contains living bacteria and freezing for any period of time renders BIO-Spira®...

    Fungal problem - black powder

I would have to say Melanism might be the cause. I do not have a camera at this time to take a pic. There are patches of the black, very small, as if someone sprinkled to much in one place. I feed them a variety of foods, frozen formula 1, dried flakes of Prime Reef by Ocean Nutrition, and...

    Fungal problem - black powder

Thanks steve-s for responding. In the lemon butterflyfish, it is barely noticeable and it is more of a dulling of color than a light powder like the clowns. However on the percula clownfish, particularly the one, it is just a fine black covering, like someone sprinkled it with black soot or...

    Fungal problem - black powder

I have 4 fish in 50gal SW FO tank. My first fish was a clownfish. When I purchased him, I noticed the upper portion of his body, near the top fin, had a bit of discoloration, darker. I since have added a few more fish including another clownfish. Now, the dark discoloration in my first...

Day 14 of Cycling - Ammonia Test

No, I think you are at .25, but photos displayed on a computer monitor can be misleading due to differences in brightness/contrast and hue. Basically, what one person sees on the screen is not necessarily what others see. I have the Aquarium Pharmaceutical Test Kit and do not think it is that...

The Valentini is a better choice, I think. Good luck! :P

    mag...something

Well there are several brand names, but one in particular is Mag-Float. You just need to be careful that you do not pick up any tiny particles of sand or coral, which is quite common. It will scratch your glass or acrylic tank especially.

    snowflake eel

Glad to help. I love that site just for the species information alone. You are correct, there are a lot of LFS out there that are more forcused on the "sale" than what would actually benefit your tank. Just recently, one LFS tried to sell me a trigger fish after telling them I had a...

    snowflake eel

There are a couple of new varieties listed on LiveAquaria.com that may suit your needs, the Ghost Eel and the Spaghettie Eel (very interesting) all desire a minimum of a 30gal tank. Here is the link: http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/scateg.cfm?siteid=21&pCatId=29 RodneyCK

    Lets play, Name... That... Parasite!!!

I am the one that posted about Marine Bio-Spira. It worked like a charm for new setup, a 50 gal SW FO tank. It does say it can be used for purposes of a QT tank, although it depends on what type of curative method you choose. You could end up killing the Nitrifying bacteria if say you went...

I have a question about my Fluval...

Same with mine Biggen. The Fluval 404 is powerful enough to break the water tension positioned below the surface if it is pointed up at a very slight angle.

How often should I be feeding the fish?

Wow, after reading this thread I have come to the conclusion that I am definitely over feeding my fish. I feed them three times a day, but two of which are heavy feedings. They always seem to be very hungry. I have four fish, a medium flame hawkfish, a medium lemon butterflyfish, and two...

Any suggestions fish-wise for a 45G tall tank?

All three are good options. You need to becareful with the eel. They are master escape artist from what I have read, so you need a secure tank lid of sorts. The cowfish will reside mostly at the top of the tank. The puffer will explore all the tank, so that might be something to keep in mind.

Any suggestions fish-wise for a 45G tall tank?

LOL..sorry possum. Correction on the puffers, a Saddle Valentini puffer can be kept in a minimum of 30 gallons. The Saddle puffer, blue dot puffer, spotted puffer and also the Honeycomb puffer can be kept in a mininum of 50 gal. Now I want a puffer.

Any suggestions fish-wise for a 45G tall tank?

Boxfish are of course one of my favorites. I don't believe you specified your tank size. If it is at least 50 gal, and depending on what you have in it, then you can have the spotted boxfish variety. They are like you said, not shy at all and I use to hand feed mine. Although, you must be...

Has anyone ever used "Herbal Ich Attack"

NightSpirit, all that I posted should be taken as a jest. :) It would be nice to have a cure that was not as harsh on fish as say copper. I too would like to see some research or more information on this product, especially from an outside source.

    high ammonia ! please help!

Just to clarify, tkos, you are not adding ammonia. Bio-Spira is live nitrifying bacteria. You are correct though in that it will not cycle over-night since you do have high amounts of ammonia already. It is used to cycle/start a new tank, but it will speed up the cycling period.

Has anyone ever used "Herbal Ich Attack"

Well getting back to the "Herbal ICH ATTACK", I would be very skeptical of this product. The webpage looks like one of those spam adds you get in your email. It even has a doctor quoted which is a dead give-away, LOL, "What Kordon has created, led by Dr. Michael Tierra - a well known...
